The Opportunity:
UCF IT within Facilities and Business Operations is seeking to hire two Network Security Engineers. The Network Security Engineer roles are integral to the Network Services team within the Telecommunication Network Service division. These positions focus on the implementation and management of network design, with the primary objective of supporting the diverse needs of both internal and external customers while ensuring the reliable, ongoing operation of the network environment.
The Network Security Engineers will closely collaborate with the infrastructure team, architects, and a dedicated group of network engineers to maintain a robust, secure, and scalable network infrastructure that supports the needs of UCF’s campus community.
Classification Title: Network Engineer IV
Responsibilities:
Operate and maintain enterprise network security platforms, including next generation firewalls (NGFW), VPN solutions, and Network Access Control (NAC), ensuring high availability and performance.
Monitor system performance, availability, and reliability to maintain secure and resilient network operations.
Diagnose and resolve network security issues identified through the ticketing system, providing escalation support as needed.
Monitor, analyze, and respond to network security events and incidents in coordination with the Network Operations Center (NOC) and Security Operations teams.
Perform advanced troubleshooting and support escalated network and security incidents.
Conduct firewall rule reviews, access audits, and compliance validations; remediate findings to reduce risk exposure.
Design, implement, and optimize firewall policies, access controls, and network segmentation strategies aligned with least privilege principles and security standards.
Develop and maintain technical documentation, including runbooks, standards, and operational procedures.
Contribute to continuous process improvement and automation initiatives to enhance operational efficiency and security posture.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of relevant experience; or High School Diploma (or equivalent) and 9 years of relevant work experience in lieu of degree; or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219(6).
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience implementing network security architectures and best practices, including firewalls (NGFW), secure access, and segmentation in enterprise environments (e.g., Cisco, Palo Alto, Fortinet).
Strong understanding of network security topology and traffic flows, with the ability to troubleshoot complex security and connectivity issues across on-premises and cloud environments.
Demonstrated hands-on experience in two or more of the following areas: Network Security Monitoring / Firewalls (NGFW) / VPN (remote access & site-to-site) / Network Access Control (e.g., Cisco ISE) / Zero Trust Architecture / Secure Web Gateway or CASB / Cloud Security (Azure/AWS) / Micro-segmentation / Threat Detection & Response / DDoS Mitigation / Identity-Based Access Controls / Switches / Routers.
Software and tools experience: Security monitoring and logging platforms (SIEM, Syslog) / IPAM / ServiceNow / SecureCRT or equivalent / Network and security visualization tools (Visio, Lucidchart) / Collaboration tools (e.g., Microsoft Teams).
Experience with security analytics, logging, and telemetry, including traffic analysis and security event correlation.
Certifications: CCNA Security, CCNP Security, PCNSE (Palo Alto), CISSP, Security+ or equivalent security-focused certifications.
Special Instructions to the Applicants:
Position requires a valid Class E driver’s license. The position may involve driving to various locations on and off campus to conduct University business.
The anticipated salary range for this position is $89,076 to $105,000. The final salary will be determined based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, and internal equity considerations.
This role supports work within secure and regulated environments and involves Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) related background screening and access protocols.
All applicants must be authorized to work for any U.S. employer. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position, and the university cannot accommodate H‑1B transfers or employment-based visa processing for individuals currently sponsored by another employer.
This is an Auxiliary (AUX) funded position. Employment is subject to availability of funding and may cease at the time funding for this employment is depleted.
