JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB SUMMARY
Under general direction from the Acting IT Director, the Senior Network Administrator performs technical and analytical work in the planning, design, implementation, and management of the City’s network infrastructure. This includes local, wide, and wireless area networks (LAN, WAN, WLAN, and SD-WAN), as well as associated physical and virtual connectivity systems.
The position is responsible for ensuring reliable, high-performance network operations across the organization, including routing, switching, wireless systems, and inter-site connectivity. Work includes supporting infrastructure stability, performance, and scalability for critical City services.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Designs, installs, administers, and troubleshoots network infrastructure including routing and switching platforms. 
  • Manages and maintains LAN, WAN, WLAN, and SD-WAN environments across multiple facilities. 
  • Configures and supports network hardware including switches, routers, wireless access points, and controllers. 
  • Installs, configures, and troubleshoots structured cabling systems, including fiber optic and copper infrastructure. 
  • Supports and maintains wireless networks, including point-to-point and point-to-multipoint connections. 
  • Monitors network performance and availability, identifying trends and implementing improvements to ensure uptime and reliability. 
  • Performs advanced troubleshooting to isolate and resolve network connectivity and performance issues. 
  • Supports telecommunications systems, including VOIP infrastructure and coordination with service providers. 
  • Maintains remote connectivity solutions including VPN and remote access technologies. 
  • Provides network support for critical systems, including utilities infrastructure and SCADA communications. 
  • Coordinates with departments and external vendors to support network-related projects and initiatives. 
  • Assists in planning and implementing network architecture improvements and expansions. 
  • Maintains documentation related to network configurations, diagrams, troubleshooting procedures, and technical standards. 
  • Monitors capacity and performance metrics to proactively prevent disruptions and downtime. 
  • Provides guidance and technical support to Helpdesk and Systems Administration staff on network-related issues. 
  • Participates in infrastructure lifecycle planning and equipment replacement strategies. 
  • Supports emergency operations as required. 
Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Knowledge of LAN, WAN, WLAN, and SD-WAN technologies and operations 
  • Understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, IP subnetting, and network protocols 
  • Skill in routing, switching, and wireless network design and support 
  • Knowledge of structured cabling and fiber optic systems 
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex network issues across multiple infrastructure layers 
  • Ability to analyze network performance and implement improvements 
  • Ability to create and maintain network diagrams and documentation 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills 
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively 
           Ability to adapt to evolving technologies and organizational needs

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in a related field and/or CCNA certification with a minimum of ten (10) years of network administration experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Must have hands-on experience with:

  • Cisco networking technologies 
  • Ruckus or Brocade switching and wireless platforms 
  • Fortinet networking platforms (routing, switching, SD-WAN) 
Experience supporting enterprise and multi-site network environments is required.
Special Qualifications:
  • Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license or be able to obtain one within 45 days of hire 
  • Must be able to pass FDLE/CJIS background requirements 
  • Must obtain relevant certification within one (1) year if not already certified

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is generally medium and may require exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

  • Kneeling: Ability to frequently bend legs at knee to come to a rest on or both knees. 
  • Lifting: Ability to lift and move objects.
  • Mental Acuity: Ability to make rational decisions. 
  • Pulling / Pushing: Ability to occasionally move objects up to 50 pounds. 
  • Reaching: Ability to extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction. 
  • Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers. 
  • Speaking / Talking: Ability to communicate clearly, accurately and concisely through speech.
  • Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time. 
  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles. 
  • Visual Acuity: Ability to perform activities such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading, operating motor vehicles; including color, depth perception, and field vision.
  • Walking: Ability to move on foot for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
